BESSEGGEN RIDGE is one of the most popular mountain hikes in Norway. National Geographic named Besseggen one of the too 20 best hikes in the world. 👍An estimated 60000 hikers climb this ridge every year. 🏔️🥾
Name: The name “Bess” comes from the Norse word bersi, which means “bear”. 🐻
Views: The ridge offers spectacular views of two lakes, Gjende and Bessvatn. Gjende’s green color comes from glacier runoff, 🧊while Bessvatn is blue. Bessvatnet lake is considered to be Norway’s clearest lake, where you can see as far as 30 meters below the surface of the water.
Difficulty: The hike is long and steep, with an elevation gain of nearly 1,100 meters. Most hikers take 6–8 hours to complete the hike, including breaks. Some parts of the hike require scrambling.
Season: The best time to hike Besseggen is from mid-June to mid-October. Weather: Weather can change quickly and dramatically, so it’s important to pack for poor weather. 🌬️Pack your rucksack for all conditions! And take plenty of water with you.
Guided hikes
If you are inexperienced or feel unsure about the trip, we recommend that youjoin a guided hike. A good guide can turn an otherwise tough day into a fantastic experience.
Never start a mountain hike without being in good enough physical shape. Every year, rescue operations are required to help hikers stranded in the mountains. Some are exhausted, injured, freezing cold, or lost, especially if they haven't made it back before nightfall. Many are poorly dressed and lack proper hiking equipment.
To make sure you don't end up like them, prepare yourself properly and learn about mountain safety before you go.
Even if sunshine and fair weather are predicted, weather conditions can change quickly. Always check the weather forecast at yr.no before you start your trip and consult with local residents. Be prepared for sudden changes in the weather and pack a rain jacket and a warm wool sweater. We recommend that you have at least two days at your disposal to increase the chances of nice weather.
Do not hike if the forecast predicts strong winds, heavy rain, thunder and lightning or fog!
With an elevation gain of nearly 1,100 metres on uneven terrain, it is crucial to wear suitable hiking shoes. Don't wear new hiking boots, but make sure to break them in before you go, to avoid blisters. There may be occasional strong gusts of wind on Besseggen, so wear wind and waterproof outerwear. Always pack an extra set of clothes, including a hat, scarf, and gloves or mittens.
There are many other hikes around Besseggen, including easier options. You can take the Gjende boat all the way west to Gjendebu and hike across Bukkelægret to Memurubu (and even head on to Besseggen from there, should you wish).
